Do Not Be Afraid

Over and over again, our fears rule over our hearts. Over and over again, God encourages us to be free from our fears. The most repeated command in the Bible is “Do not be afraid.” It occurs dozens if not hundreds of times throughout Scripture (depending on how you count it). When the Israelites sought freedom from slavery in Egypt, when the people were lost in the wilderness and hungry and thirsty, when evil kings exploited the poor and vulnerable, when wars raged, when famine or natural disaster struck, when God’s people were hopeless, when Mary received the news that she was going to be the mother of the Messiah, when the people came to Jesus for healing, when Jesus rose from the dead, when the early churches were fighting and fractious, when God’s people weren’t sure they were going to make it through these trials and tribulations, God appeared and said, “Do not be afraid.” Continue reading
